Lawrence Chaplin/Protogenos. 48"X32" Oil on Masonite, $3400

The first born of the immortals, those who formed the very fabric of the universe, were known in Greek mythology as Protogenoi (literally the First Born). They were, for the most part, purely elemental beings—the sky, the earth, the ocean—although a few of them were described as manifesting themselves in humanlike form, with evident links to their native element. The Protogenos of generation, the creator-god, was believed to have sprung from the original seed of creation at the beginning of time—a silver egg. Also called Eros, Protogenos is said to have been swallowed whole by Zeus to gain supremacy over the universe.
